Gontaro 権太呂 is a hundred-year old soba restaurant in downtown Kyoto. It was established in 1910, and is one of the most famous soba place in Kyoto.There are several branches in Kyoto, i went to the main branch that night, just several minutes walk from the Nikishi Market.
There are different speciality soba in different season, such as some special cold soba in summer. It is winter now, the season for hot soup soba with grilled duck breast(鴨なんばそば).
That’s everything on the menu, bit hard for foreigners to recognize. Anyway i would just go with the seasonal one.
Hot soup soba with duck breast 鴨なんばそば (1600 JPY)
A large bowl of hot soup soba seems so perfect in such a freezing winter night. The bowl is huge with a lot soba, at least to me because im a low-carb eater. Topped with some leeks to balance the smell of the duck.
The handmade soba is really good, strong taste of the buckwheat. 自家制的蕎麥非常好吃，蕎麥味濃郁。
The duck breast was firstly grilled, and then sliced into smaller pieces. The color perfectly tells eveything- tender and juicy. With some seven-spices pepper on the duck breast to make the taste stronger and better.I intend to have just part of the soba because it is really a lot. But i ended with an empty bowl, even soak up all the duck soup.
Matcha Warabi-mochi わらび餅
Free dessert is also inculuded although i ordered a la carte. Strong in matcha flavor, nice ending.
