Mentioning about local snacks and desserts you must eat in Hong Kong, egg tart is always something you shouldn’t miss. The egg tarts in Hong Kong is quite different from the Portuguese egg tarts with a buttery and flaky tart base. There are lots of famous bakeries in Hong Kong selling egg tarts, but Tai Cheong Bakery is always my favorite place for egg tarts.
Firstly opened in 1954 on Lyndhurst Terrace, this little bakery has been around for more than half century, with the reputation of the king of egg tarts.
Before step into Tai Cheong Bakery, we’ ve already smell of crispy cookie crust and sweet egg custar ach egg tart. We usually visited there in the morning as we stayed in Central for most of the time and there was no queue. But if you are coming before lunch and afterward, you should get ready for the line.
The egg tarts is priced at $6 (Dec.2014), the pipping hot egg tarts came with a very buttery and appetzing smell.
The tart base is a shortbead one, by using almond powder instead of regular flour. The curst is thin, buttery, crumbly and melted in my mouth. The egg custard is silky smooth and high in egg flavor, not overly sweet.
