Bo.lan, no.28 of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant 2014, is one of the most famous Thai infused restaurants in Bangkok. Bo.lan is a story of east meets west, specifically Thai-born Duangporn Songvisava and Australian-born Dylan Jones, who met at David Thompson’s erstwhile London outpost Nahm. Both chefs, the husband-and-wife team now oversees one of the most respected restaurants in Bangkok: locals, expats and tourists come for authentic Thai cooking (it’s been given an approving nod by Slow Food Bangkok) that draws influence from the country’s fiery street food and home-cooking traditions as well as its more refined palace-style cuisine.
One of the most glamorous restaurants in the city, the space has a stripped-back, contemporary look, with lots of beautiful untreated wood and a sprinkling of carefully chosen traditional Thai elements.
Prawns with local leaves
Spanish Mackerel salad with local rosella
Coconut cream base soup with local chicken, banana blossom and Vietnamese mint
Red curry fish with winter melon – the most spicy dish among all. I cannot tell too much about the taste as i mentioned, but the fish was overcooked and too dry for my liking.
Stir-fry prawns with paddy oat leaves was more like homecooked Chinese dish : eggs fried with tomato, and yes, finally something not spicy yet taste a bit sweet. After all those super hot dishes, i enjoyed the stir-fried prawns so much.
And certainly, we had all these dishes with brown rice & jasmine rice, otherwise it would be really tough to eat them.
The waiter kindly brought us some some fresh fruits with minced pork for refreshing as we cannot stop drinking water.
Dessert: Snake fruit sweet soup with peanut and rice crackers
We were the only table during the lunch, so the service was quite efficient. But to be honest, the food was not very impressive, i cannot remember the taste of the food but hot. Bo.Lan was the last restaurant i visited for my Bangkok trip in Dec.2014, and it was probably the restaurant i enjoyed the least among all. (Gaggan, Sra Bua, Eat Me, Nahm)
